Alum Carrie-Anne Moss - The Award-Winning Actress and Entrepreneur Visits with Academy Students

Academy alum Carrie-Anne Moss has excelled at portraying powerful and tenacious female characters on the big screen. She’s recognized worldwide for her defining roles as Trinity in The Matrix franchise and Natalie in Momento, and this November, she introduced viewers to a new strong female persona, Jeri Hogarth, in the binge-worthy Netflix Original Series, Jessica Jones.

In her gender-bending portrayal of the male comic-book character, Jeryn Hogarth, Moss has received rave reviews for her portrayal of the dark, cryptic, no-nonsense attorney who relies on the superhero-turned-private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to gather information related to her clients.

2015 was a big year for Moss. In addition to debuting Jessica Jones, she wrapped production on Brain on Fire, a new film set to hit theaters in early 2016, and focused on growing her lifestyle website Annapurna Living, an online community inspired by her desire to connect with others who share a passion for nutrition, meditation and yoga.

“I could never do what I do as an actress, as a woman, as a mother living a life today,” Moss said, “if I didn’t have the foundation of my spiritual practice, my yoga practice, my meditation practice, my general attitude.”

During a recent visit to The Academy’s Los Angeles campus, Moss shared with students her passion for Kundalini yoga and how it helps her to stay connected with her life, no matter how busy her schedule may get. She encouraged the room of student actors to focus on fitness, nutrition and mental nourishment to stay grounded and avoid stagnancy in between classes and auditions.

Moss also shared with students her personal journey through the craft of acting – from her time studying at The Academy’s Pasadena campus to sustaining a career while staying truthful and connected to her inner self. She even taught the students one of her favorite Kundalini yoga exercises.

“I feel so lucky to have been a part of this,” one student posted to social media. “Carrie-Anne Moss visited The Academy as a guest speaker last night and she was truly inspirational!”

Meanwhile, Moss took to her own Instagram account to share the experience with her followers.

She wrote:

“Last night I had the opportunity to speak at the acting school I went to when I was 19 years old. The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I shared my stories and some of the gold I've learned along the way. I was of service last night but I received more than I gave. If I can empower young people that true value lies within them; to be grateful for their creativity; to be themselves; to not look to Hollywood or others to define them; to invest in their well-being; you get the picture.

Did I mention that this beautiful group of young people joined me in a 1 minute meditation of ego eradicator!!! Pretty amazing.”

Thank you, Carrie-Anne, for “returning home” to share your wisdom and insights with The Academy students. We’re so pleased to have been a part of your journey as an actor, and we look forward to seeing what’s to come!
